Top of Swissness

The Schynige Platte railway takes you from Wilderswil up to the Schynige Platte viewpoint. Over a distance of 7,255 km the rack-railway climbs 1,420 metres.

Along the way, the diversity of nature never fails to impress: forests, Alpine meadows and the superb view of the famous Bernese Oberland scenery with Lakes Thun and Brienz.
Whereas the Pre-Alps have dominated the landscape until now - with the Alpine pastures, forests and lakes - a clear view of the glistening white giants of the Bernese Oberland opens up. Opposite are the Eiger, Mönch and Jungfrau! After passing the «Grätli tunnel» (5,6 km) the change in scenery is unique.

The Schynige Platte railway went into service on 14th June 1893. In 1914, the railway was electrified, although much of the rolling stock used to be in service on the Wengeralp railway. Hence, the Schynige Platte railway reflects the history of the Jungfrau railways.
