This tradition is an age-old tradition of Celtic origin. It lies in the pre-Christian times, when the residents of the valleys kept the evil spirits away from their villages during the longest nights of the year with «Trycheln». This tradition still remains today and is passed on from generation to generation.
The last week of the old year begins in the night of the 25th to the 26th December and ends with the last workday of the year, the «Ubersitz».
During this week, the various Trychel groups drive away the evil spirits with their impressive parades through the villages of the Haslital. The Trychel groups get larger and the noise louder until the climax in the night of the «Ubersitz». During this evening, all «Trychler» from the surrounding villages of Willingen, Hausen, Eisenbolgen, Unterbach, Hasliberg and Meiringen make their way to the Meiringen village centre for a collective Trychel parade.
