Eigerness
The sustainable development of a tourist resort like Grindelwald is a motivating yet challenging endeavour because we have so many visitors from all over the world. Grindelwald Tourism has been promoting and supporting the Eigerness association and the use of the Eigerness brand since 2006. The goal here is to create a network of local services, attractions and service providers that together create sustainable guest experiences. We encourage guest loyalty and longer stays, which helps create economic value and promote the development of innovative, resource-conserving experiences in Grindelwald.
Generating energy from wood
The Grindelwald wood-fired thermal power station is the first thermal power station in Switzerland to be operated using a full de-steaming process including heat recovery and combustion air conditioning. Long-distance lines connect businesses and households to the power station, which can cover 100% of their energy requirements for heating and hot water. The combustion of wood chips, sawmill waste wood and waste wood from the region generates carbon-neutral heat energy.
Guided group tours of the thermal power station are available on request.
UNESCO partnership
Grindelwald, along with 22 other local communities, is part of the Swiss Alps Jungfrau-Aletsch UNESCO World Heritage Site and co-signed the Konkordiaplatz Charter in 2001. The communities have made a pledge to promote sustainable regional development within their community boundaries. In 2021, Grindelwald consolidated this partnership and finalised its cooperation with UNESCO Swiss Alps Jungfrau-Aletsch. As part of this partnership, three major themed trails have been set up in Grindelwald for groups/school classes and digital visits. The family-oriented adventure trail “Wo bist du, kleiner Challifloh?” (“Little Challi flea, where are you?”) opened in 2023. This means there is now yet another way to explore the world heritage site sustainably and have fun at the same time.
